Jonathan, a master in the art of deception, isn’t who he appears to be. As their bond grows, Kit’s desire blinds her to the truth— a shocking discovery shatters her faith and ultimately tests her integrity. From the first blush of fall quarter to the final breath of spring, hard lessons will be learned. To “graduate” into an uncertain future, Jonathan and Kit must first embrace the present—including the injustices, ambiguities and absolute beauty of their lives. Beneath the ever-changing Humboldt skies they forge ahead; they stumble and sometimes fall. Heliotrope, a coming-of age story for the ages.

Well written page turner Heliotrope by JC Miller is a historical novel that plays out in hipper, and simpler times. She weaves the lives of her characters together around the themes of work, study, love, and learning. Each character has overwhelming natural human flaws, and nearly all have the strength to grow and change. As time pushes the characters forward through the school year, they draw the reader into their private lives. JC's characters come alive to remind us of people we may have known in college. Her descriptions of place make us feel like we ourselves spent at least a few semesters behind the redwood curtain of rainy Northern California. This is a must-read, especially for fans of JC's other novels.Product details

Heliotrope JC Miller 9781935619253 Books Reviews
Heliotrope is a story about discovering one’s path in a complicated world and finding a place to belong. For Kit Hilliard, home is a place to escape. She goes as far from the desert town of her childhood as she can, to attend college in lush 1975 Arcata, California. On the cusp of graduation, she falls in love with her senior seminar professor, Jonathan Wakefield, but Jonathan, a best-selling author, is not who he appears to be. After a dinner party goes awry, Kit flees to the comfort of her buddy, Milo, and makes a discovery that shocks her. Betrayed and embarrassed she lashes out in revenge. Jonathan takes a hard look at his life and finds no loving net awaits him back home. With Kit’s graduation looming and Jonathan’s teaching contract coming to an end, the future is uncertain. Both must recognize and create the lives they yearn to lead.
I found the writing is both straightforward and lyrical. JC Miller is adept with figurative language and can root into the deepest recesses of her characters for truth. She’s got her pen on the pulse of humanity. Her characters are likeable, real, and experience the full range of human emotions. The story unfolds naturally in a smooth, organic progression, leading the reader to a satisfying and hope filled conclusion. Heliotrope will resonate with anyone who has experienced the bruising of coming to terms with life and remembers the pain and joy of finding oneself at any age.
A delightful page-turner. Fantastic characters, and a nice twist that you don't see coming!
Excellent writing.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Heliotrope". A real page-turner, I was tempted to consume it all too quickly, but instead, I chose to savor it slowly, like a delicious desert. The story and setting took me back to my own college years, also spent in Humboldt County. JC Miller has brought all her skills together in writing this book; her magical descriptive ability and in-depth character development. The story moves along at a good pace and I love the open ending! I almost felt like I was back in Arcata, with it's lush, ferny forests and quaint, small town feel. I highly recommend this beautiful book!
Great book, Character Driven. In the spirit of full disclosure I want the readers to know that I know the author. The following critique is from an email that I sent her after finishing Heliotrope. I was honest with her in everything I said.
Hi Jeanne. I just finished Heliotrope and I loved it. What a great book! And so well written! If I had a magic wand I wouldn't change a thing. I'm going to loan it out to a friend here before mailing it up to Arcata next month as a birthday present.
Here's a few thoughts about the novel When I read novels I want the characters to be alive and real. That's what I found here in a big way. Consequently I got involved in the character's lives and interactions. All the characters were real. There were no holes in this book. Very good.
I also liked how the narrative moved. It went from one scene to the next without getting bogged down with too much explanation - for instance, when Kit and Milo went on their break-in caper up at Founder's Hall you went right into it (and it was believable) without unecessary pages of how they came to their decision to break-in. Well done! I never knew what was going to happen next! I kept turning the pages.
I liked as well the bits and pieces of wisdom sprinkled throughout the book (and again, just enough, not too much)
A couple examples Page 72 "You cannot make someone fit." Boy that's true! In fact that gave me some insight into the troubled arrangement with the woman up in Arcata who I'm sending Heliotrope to.
Another example of wisdom was your description of how Jonathan was able to feel better about himself after binging in the bar in Fortuna. It was a great way of putting it, that it wasnt the alcohol itself he was drawn to but rather the mollifying effects that alcohol had on his self-esteem.
And on page 116 "as if poverty were some social experiment". Well put.
I used to write a little so I liked your description of the act of writing in the 2nd paragraph on Pg 148. I can imagine that you know that grief all too well from all too real experience.
So yes, I got wrapped up in all the tumultuousness of that time period, felt I knew the characters very well - and even got choked up a little toward the end of the book (don't you DARE say anything about that to the others at you know where. Ha!)
I'll definitely read your next book. Thank you for writing this one. Its a shame your good writing doesn't get in front of a larger audience. Unfortunately the world works the wrong way around. It's like musicians. I once saw a bumper sticker that read, Real Musicians Have Day Jobs.
If I were Jonathan I would say the same things to you that he said to Kit. And as a wild guess I'm thinking there may have been a Jonathan in your Kit life up there in those wonderful days of magical Arcata. Thanks again, Doug
